WHY ARE WE HERE?

Why Are We Here by Joy Nandy
It is only because of our Karma that we are here. We are here to pay some dues for our misdeeds.

Yes, for yelling or slapping the wife or husband this morning, for thinking ill of someone in the last life, for taking revenge on someone else a hundred thousand lives back, and for kicking the dog a million lives back. That’s right – we have been violent and unkind, for so long, when we are meant to not hurt anyone.

Every thought and action has been taken into account – and to be eternally happy on earth, every human has to make good his or her wrongs, in this life or the future ones, there is no escape from it. This is why we are here, in short, and there are ways out.

To remove this Karma, we have to do the direct opposite of our previous actions – we have to do good and kind deeds as our normal behaviour. Be non-violent, non- hurting, peaceful and calm at all times. Be Satvik. That’s the realised state.

This “good deeds” mean doing work that benefits others and not us. Selfless deeds. We should also be kind and gentle with everyone, and love all animals and nature for they are all God too. When we hurt others, we hurt God, and He does not like it, and makes us pay.

“Karma” simply means, “work”, it is not a complicated concept to understand. To make good our mistakes, we have to work, just like prisoners who have to work without pay or acknowledgement. We are the same.

Karma is our ‘Taskmaster’ indeed. In fact, it is very much emphasised in the Hindu Scriptures that we should not seek fame or even a thank you for the works we do for others, again, just the same as prisoners. Earth is a prison for those who are shacked to worldliness, but they are able to free themselves through the study of Spiritual Knowledge, – the Knowledge of Liberation.

As it says in the Holy Gita, “To work alone you have competence, but not for the fruits thereof”. This means that we should only do good work the best we can, and to do it with joy in our hearts, may it be professionally or otherwise, but never to do any work only to benefit or profit from it selfishly.

This “good deed” attitude will also make sure that every task we do, turns out excellent because it was not motivated by a reward but by love, kindness and willingness. The Creator loves any task done through a person’s self-effort that benefits others or societies and deducts Karma.

Why is this Karma or work thing so important?
Because it is “pay back time”. Every single one of our ill thoughts, speech and actions has been accounted for by the One. He sees all, because He is ‘in’ all – no one can hide from Him. He knows every single one of our thoughts, because it is Him who gives us the ‘ability’ to even have a thought. He animates our bodies and minds.

So every human life form we have, is a chance for us to pay back, – only because we can read this Knowledge [as humans] and understand why are we here, and what is our purpose in this life.

Our good acts in this life are to repay for bad acts or deeds we do in our present life, and did in all our past lives, the millions of them. Every human birth is a rare opportunity for a being to escape this cycle of mortal births and deaths that we suffer in, and this is done purely through understanding the Knowledge of Liberation or this Spiritual Knowledge. Consider this Knowledge the ‘escape plan’ from the prison that we are locked in.

Hence, Karma binds us, and Karma also frees us from this same bondage. This is why everything we do has to be in dedication to the One who has been, and is keeping a scorecard of our every thought and action – even the tiniest ones.

With every genuine good deed we do for someone else, even at work, God takes note of it and deducts some of our karma debts that we have accrued. The more good work, deeds, thoughts, speech and actions we do, the more debts are erased, and slowly we will naturally feel light and happy – for no reason – this is the state of Enlightenment – happy without a cause.
